Descriptions: The adult birds have slaty-black body, a glossy black head and a white bill with a white frontal shield. Immature duller than adult with whitish throat. Juvenile grey brown with whitish throat and breast. The legs are shorter and stronger when compared to other rail species and are greenish gray in color.
Food: They eat the leaves, shoots, and stems of plants and love to pull up underwater weeds.
Habitat: Common on lakes, reservoirs, and slow-moving watercourses, in fresh and brackish marshes, and occasionally on saltwater.
Distribution: It is found in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and parts of North Africa.
